Euglossine - Floridian Abstract

Ever since I met Tristian Whitehill he has been engulfed by music. He is an important part of the Gainesville music community, always collaborating with musicians -- and artists like The Church of Holy Colors -- and is frequently organizing or attending shows around town, supporting and building the scene. While currently lending his creativity and time to Gainesville bands Levek and MSNRA, he has continued to release a steady flow of music under Euglossine. In March he released Jewel Hunter Geomancy on Rotifer.

Euglossine has most recently released a cassette with Housecraft entitled Floridian Abstract. Both releases expand upon quickly evolving structures with an emphasis on sonic detail found with his efforts for Orchal & Vir's Elestial Sound release. The familarness may be do to the fact that Floridian Abstract is snippets of unreleased material from the past two years. I anxiously anticipate what will come next with Euglossine.

Young Adult

Young Adult is a five piece band from Tallahassee. I got a chance to see them perform last weekend at the Outlet Benefest. Their live set was great, very together, and their seven-track release Aporia is worth obtaining. Spirit Cat collective's James Martin, whom you may know from Oh Fortuna or Aircraft, interviewed members of Young Adults recently.

New Praything EP

Today Ju Kovacevich, the mastermind behind the band Praything, has released Her Skin Caught the Glow EP; it is Praything's first official release since 2010's Born EP.

While a few songs on Born had percussion, the new EP is far more beat driven. Ju also drops the use of guitar on Her Skin Caught the Glow completely, other than a textural guitar riff by Ghost Fields' JP Wright on "A Million Lives". Amongst JP and the rest of the crew who aided Ju in this release include singer Sam Moss from Hundred Waters.

You can download Her Skin Caught the Glow EP for free on Bandcamp, but for all the work that went into it, I'm sure Ju would gladly accept a buck or two.

Bayatas - On Your Clothing

Gabriel Berrios, whom you may recognize as Tree Hopping, begun Bayatas a few months ago as he temporarily relocated from Gainesville to Miami and then permanetly to New York for school. He has been releasing what appears could end up being a full length of material two or three songs at a time on Bandcamp for free/donation. In April, NPR caught on, and included Bayatas on a playlist of theirs. Later Bayatas ranked in NPR's best albums of 2012 thus far. Reportedly Gabriel is one in only a few on the list who haven't had a physical release. In a time where it is becoming increasingly easier to make music in a bedroom, an oversaturation of media can be an ocean too vast to swim through and wash up anywhere significant. When an artist emerges without having toured or hired a publicist, the rare occurance should motivate you to atleast give them a try.

Donate what you wish for the above songs and more on Bayatas' Bandcamp.

Travis Johnson

Travis Johnson is an experimental musician currently residing in St Augustine, Florida. He runs the label Ilse, which has a catalog of over 30 releases and growing. On Ilse web page, Travis Johnson is described as "[the] director/curator of Ilse, plays improvised electroacoustic music using using radios, electromagnetic coils, speaker cones, found objects, electronic circuits, balloons and - occasionally - string instruments... While collaborative improvisation is his main interest, he sometimes enjoys composing at the computer."

Below is a a performane at Hal McGee's apartment in Gainesville, which he describes as "a series of shows featuring performances of minimalist free improvisation, held in a highly intimate setting in my small apartment in Gainesville, on Saturday afternoons".

Travis Johnson has some of his material released through Ilse; you can find some free releases through Control Valve.

Ben Varian

Ben Varian is a musician from Tallahasee, Florida. He is a part of the collective Werepossum, which began as a band and evolved into a website and a grouping of musicians that often collaborate and contribute to each others' projects.
I had heard 2010's Keeping Track of Time months ago and had been anticipating new material. In February of this year Ben put out his first full length, Potassium. Ben had this to say about the album:

"I decided to group together the EPs I've released along with some new songs to make one cohesive album.

I admit this is headphone music, USB microphone, soft-focus music. The music asks you to listen to it a few times so that you can find the little blips and blops and secrets that I've hidden in there, but doesn't insist because it recognizes that you've got things to do and you've got your own thoughts to wrangle with. The music insinuates and gyrates and talks around the subject because the subject isn't something that can be talked about directly. There are plenty of mentions of "it" on this album, and "it" is something, but it's scientifically impossible for me to tell you what it is, exactly. All I can do is approximate the sensation of "it" and layer sounds upon sounds with ever-decreasing fidelity and hope that you have a moment to dig through them and unearth my goofy impressions of holy moments."

Ben gives his music away for free, so make sure you grab both releases. He has been steadily releasing music since February, so make sure to be checking back on his Bandcamp.

For more info, Travis over at Too Many Carpets did an interview with Ben Varian.

Marina Orchestra

Marina Orchestra is a band from Knoxville. Taken from Marina Orchestra's biography: "Marina Orchestra is inspired by music from all over the world, and there is an inherent jubilance that the sun-soaked eleven piece group radiates.... It’s exotic, yet familiar. It’s a love of global music filtered through the ears of “indie rock” kids. It’s ripe with homages and a well-rounded respect for the whole history of music. But mostly, it’s a party.

The Marina project came about when Knoxvillian Justin Powers decided to channel his deep-seated love of African and Caribbean music into a band that would shake things up. There was an entire world of blaring brass instruments, dancing back up singers and wild handed percussionists that he longed to see on stage every night. Soon enough the ever expanding Marina Orchestra was quickly finding a way into everyone's schedule. 'The only reason I do this, is to look up and see the whole room dancing,' says Powers, 'That’s all that I need.'"

If you are familiar and enjoy work from Wingsuit and Dirty Projectors, you would probably love this band.

Future Ape Tapes

Taken from their website, Future Ape Tapes "is forever a low frequency, altered state, animal totem band machine from Athens, GA. Comprised of a two piece foundation, D* and Tom(b) TV have made sounds to zone out to since 2006." Future Ape Tapes releases include the solo effort of Tom(b) Television.

Their latest release entitled Reincarnations>>>> dates back to March 2011, though in December 2011 Future Ape Tapes announced they were writing new songs and working on a new EP; be on the look out for new material soon.

Tom(b) Television released Idiosyncapator in December of 2010. The artists described it with these words: "Idiosyncapator was made by Future Ape Tapes co-founder Tom(b) Television, aka Tommy TV, Bhagdaddy as a solo endeavor. Recorded half on 4-track, half on to the computer, it is a collection of songs about reincarnation, gender and other identity crisis, as well as meditations on the relation between author and audience. While predominantly referencing hip-hop in style, Idiosyncapator also marks a conscious departure from this paradigm with experiments into guitar-based song structures. Enjoy!"

Tatsuya Nakatani is a contemporary percussionist, originally from Osaka, Japan. He performs creative music around the world.
He has created a totally unique sound which defies category or genre. He utilizes the drum set, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls
and metal objects.

Nakatani allowed some Church of Holy Colors patrons use his gongs. Below is the audio of their improvisational gong peformance featuring Felici Asteinza, John David Eriksen, Charles Rye, Mark McGee, Zach Randall, and Shara Lunon
