Beatcasso

Beatcasso is an experimental hip hop producer from Miami, Florida. Orginally from Nicaragua, he plans on moving to another city soon. On his wordpress he says:

"I simply make music, that I want to listen to. I’m a big hip-hop fan so that’s why I make hip-hop, I’m also a big fan of hip-hop that transcends beyond the common stereo typical boring sound hip-hop seems to always be related to, but don’t get me wrong I’m also a real big fan of old school hip-hop."

Beatcasso's music is made of studdery glitch beats, lofi-ness/vinyl crackles, occasional samples of speech, and laid back melodies.

Mandragora Dream

Mandragora Dream is a five part ambient piece created by Floridians Tim Hicks and Olesya Kryvoruchko, playing guitar and violin respectively. Softly behind, the strings are accompanied by snappers, keys, shakers, tape echo or other nice textures adding to the overall feel of each part of Mandragora Dream. This is much more than some kid adding a bunch of delay to two notes on a keyboard or guitar to make "ambience" (which is sometimes good too) , it's two pro musicians getting together and making some wonderful music with a nice progression.

It's available for purchase for $5, or you can stream it on bandcamp, or download the part posted below for free.

John Ralston

John Ralston is a musician from Lake Worth, Florida. He's had a few releases over the past few years--all very dynamic folk-ish pop songs with instrumentation melodies, and singing style that may be for fans of Margot & The Nuclear So and So's.

These songs are from "Needle Bed", released back in 2005.

John Ralston - Time For Me To Ruin Everything

John Ralston - Our Favorite Record Skips

I think it's impressive to hear how him and his band reproduced "Our Favorite Record Skips".

Currently John Ralston is playing with "Invisible Music", an 8 piece band. They've played locally with The Dewars, and also GIVERS (from Lousiana) who I've been listening to a lot lately, definitely worth checking out.

Catch John Ralston next at the Lake Worth-It fest in Bryant Park, Downtown Lake Worth August 7th.

MP3: FISHING - OOOO

Australian Russell Fitzgibbon and Doug Wright are FISHING. Their song OOOO is based on an upbeat major key loop, a bassy beat, layers of poppy sounds coming in and out, and the mix changing with a palette of all different tones and sounds. At times there is more of a hip-hop feel to it, and other times I'm reminded of the quirkiness of the soundtrack of the japanese Katamari Damacy video games.
Right now OOOO is the only song floating around for download, but you can stream 5 more songs on their myspace page. All of them are very much beat heavy and full of nice layers.

Galleries is the solo project of Alberto Hernandez of Viernes. He just released "Gold Blooded", a two song virtual 7". Gold Blooded is characterized by spacey ambient blending guitar sounds. The latter of the two songs feature the artist Foxes In Fiction.
Alberto plans to release a full length for Galleries in 2011.

Evenings announces 7"

Double Denim's second release will be a 7" single by our friend Evenings. Check out his new song below. It's definitely the same laid back feel of his debut EP but a little more groovy and a quicker thought, barely toppling over the 2 minute mark.

Memoryhouse - The Years EP

I think it's worth noting that Memoryhouse's EP "The Years" is availabe for free through Arcade Sound Ltd. It is a very beautiful collection of songs fitting in somewhere between melodramatic chillness and dream pop. The crush of waves, female vocals, melodic melding melodies, really really great.

Below is two different fan videos for the song "Lately".

Right now Memoryhouse is on a summer tour with Twin Sister spanning all the way until the end of August. If you're in Tallahassee, catch the two live at The Engine Room August 21 with Sumsun and in Gainesville the night before at the Atlantic. The rest of the shows are posted on the band's myspace.

Healthy Animal - Empty

"Empty" is the most recent release by the eerie drone sounds of Healthy Animal from Coral Springs, Florida. It's packaged in a cassette wrapped in tin foil tied with rope. We saw Amm Een arrange a group of around 5 people to perform live last weekend as part of Summer of Weirds, it was really cool. Like the album tracks, drums, bass, and guitar, were used, but a female's voice through pedals added the the bled together wall of grayish brown color they created.

Healty Animal - Smoke

Healthy Animal - Wind

A short lived flute appears every once in awhile, where as the mass of the songs are conceived with some sort of distorted instrument, drums, guitar, all in a very interesting and strange discordant way. "Gaze" 1 , 2 , 3 showcase the most aggresive and gritty the album can feel; inbetween, "Song" and "Smoke" evoke more of a lone journey through the forest, lost forever from your tribe and feeling the void inside yourself. As the album comes to resolve, "Wind" is the most relaxed and harmonious.

For fans of Pocahaunted, Sun Araw, or High Wolf.

Young Egypt

Young Egypt is an experimental band from St Petersburg, Florida. At times their sound gives me a feeling like the drawn out darker noise experimental parts of old Mars Volta albums. With delaying whole 4 measures or more on the vocals it quickly makes insane feelings, something relative Gang Gang Dance. If you're into High Wolf, Healthy Animal or Off Balance Atlas, you may enjoy their tunes. They've performed on 88.5 WMNFs Artful Dodgins radio segment out of Tampa, which comprises a lot of their Soundcloud music player posted below.

From their website, the band describes themselves:
'Young Egypt began as a recording project and it was uncertain whether it would evolve beyond the studio. On several instances, Phil and Jefff performed live as duo, but it was a semi-awkward enterprise until Randolph joined the collective. Robert was intrigued by Young Egypt’s first set of recordings and he quickly offered to master the tracks free of charge. He was also eager to see Young Egypt evolve beyond a recording project into a fully functioning band joining as a fulltimer in Sept. Rather than pursue the normal avenues for bands, Young Egypt first tested their material in the local poetry scene. This would become known as the “December open mic binge.” By the end of January, Young Egypt began playing a number of free, all-ages shows in Central and West Central Florida with other various Florida experimental music groups. '

Early Sumsun EP under different name

Judson Rogers (Sumsun) has been making music for years exploring all different sounds. He has just released "People Protect What They Love", an EP under the name of Moka Moka made back in 2005. The sounds are in a lot of ways similar to Sumsun's upcoming release Samo Milago, but also very different. "People Protect" has a more electronic feel, with a lot of reverse sounds and more defined and definite sounds, whereas Samo Milagro displays a more collage of textures blending into each other. For fans of the more 'art' sound of Broken Social Scene.

Lissajou

Lissajou makes chiptune music. I can't say much more about him because I can't find out anything more about him, he has virtually no internet presence. I had to email Chris (Electronic Sub South) just to find some music from Lissajou, as he has recently deleted his myspace page. He played at Endless Bummer in Gainesville last weekend, it was insane. He jumped around in a full-suit jamming away on a modded gameboy making dancey 8bit electro craziness. For the most part, each of his songs build and build, change, and build--with song files no shorter than 15 minutes.

Thanks Brian!

Philip Seymour Hoffman

Noah Klein, who helps write and organize thefmly, is musically known as Philip Seymour Hoffman. The songs below are from his album "Fire Island" which is available for free download. The album sounds like spontaneous thoughts, sometimes realized with acoustic instruments--guitars, drums--and sometimes with drum machines, samples, and electronic editing. He's busy playing all over the country (as well as across seas), taking bedroom music everywhere, music very personal to him.

High Wolf

High Wolf is a solo project (but seemingly more live). The sounds are made with percussion, guitar, keyboard, vocals, and other things in particular ways. Euphoric (yet sometimes really creepy), made of lofi loops slowly progressing. You make dig this if you're into Sun Araw, Attached Hands, or Off Balance Atlas.

High Wolf's "Bizzare Moonlight"

Check out this awesome live performance from a show with Pocahaunted in Paris.

High Wolf has released on Moamoo , an independent label from Tokyo worth checking out. Their focus is on imaginative sounds, more experimental things. Lucky Dragons have released material on Moamoo and Sumsun is about to.

He has released tapes/vinyl on Not Not Fun Records.

Totem Pole

Today, Kevin Williams, the brainchild of Totem Pole, released "Caves and Tunnels, Mountains and Stairs", a 6 track EP for free. Totem Pole is rooted in West Palm Beach, Florida headed by Kevin, with a fluctuating backing band. Overall--and maybe somewhat influenced by the band and album name--the tracks give some sort of primal prepsychdelic vibe, a modern reaction to 70s rock. Even the more pop-oriented brighter songs such as "Pointless/Love Gallery" somehow still keep this vision. A slight deviation,"Who Can Kill Rasputin", is a short creepy track to the effect of--but darker than--the opening track of Gang Gang Dance's "God's Money". Kevin has an awesome selection of instruments--guitar and shakers are most prominent, but there's also organ, sitar, accordian, and a lot of other colors that support the sound.

Nathan W. McKee

Nathan W. McKee is an electroacoustic musician from Brooklyn, New York. I really love the choice of instrumentation and how it's put together. It's electronic music most of it in a very not electronic way...with guitar, glockienspiel, drum sounds, piano sounds, and more acoustic sounds coming off his palette. Cooke Breath is the most revealing of the electronicness with glitchy fluttery melodic sounds.

Nathan McKee - V-Day
Nathan McKee - Cookie Breath

His live performance with a band seems pretty cool too...

Finglebone

Finglebone is the sounds of Adam Varney from the UK, on the page for his release "23", it is stated:

"Adam Varney's project Finglebone started as soon as he learned to play the guitar in 1992. Adam would spend time recording using tape players and drew influences from folk songs underlined by teenage angst. As influences changed and interests broadened Adam began using electronic arrangements and drum machines to flesh out sounds exploring different atmospheres and textures. "

Befuddled by ruralcolours

You should pick up a pair of headphones for this, slightly atmospheric with certain panning and light effects over the mix, but more like campfire songs acoustic. The guitar melodies on Flogiston are really soothing. Lucid is more of the meditative wilderness feel, with reverse guitar. All the songs share the same feeling aside from a mood change in the last song "Flouse Hole Sun", like after a blissful connection to nature the night sets in and you feel in survival mode...

Motherly

Motherly is a project coming out of Denton, Texas. "Shutterbugs", which was featured on the Waaga Compilation, is an amazing song. It sounds somewhere between Dntel and Caribou with child-like melodies and little electronic manipulations and alterations. Really beautiful sound.

Veux - Late Key

Late Key is a really cool chill song crafted by matthewdavid and Dog Bite. Forrest Reiff (Off Balance Atlas) edited a video for it, using a lot of shiny, grainy, magical textures. Fast progressing shots of bubbles, leaves, trees, hands, CDs, windmills, pavement, etc...All of this helps to expose new ways of interpreting the song.

Sumsum Remixes Asipop / Super Spacey Sunburnt Summer Mixtape

Sumsun just put out a spacey mix of our song "Asipop", taking the stems and creating something completely of his own with it. I was lucky enough to hear a sneak peak of his upcoming album and this remix sounds a lot like it, so that's something to be excited about.
Judson released "Super Spacey Sunburnt Summer"--a mixtape he put together of some cool jams, including songs by Off Balance Atlas, Evenings, Cosmic Sound, Matthewdavid, Dem Hunger, Golden Ages, Rabbit Punch, Teebs, Hard Mix, Blue Hawaii, Dream Cop, Gold Panda, and Dak.
His new album "Samo Milagro" will be released on Leaving Records.
And on top of that, we're all talking about doing a "Sumhums" cassette...

Warmer Climes Mixtapes

Vlad contacted us awhile back and had us make a 'mixtape' of our top 10 favorite songs or at least 10 memorable/influential songs. Before you had to keep checking back to see who had made one, but now he has the whole list of artists who have made a mixtape for him. It includes Prince Rama, MillionYoung, Hard Mix, Air France, Phaseone, Dntel, Tape Deck Mountain, Taken By Trees, RxRy, Universal Studios Florida, Coma Cinema, Phillip Oskar Augustine, Baths, Spirituals, Florene, and many more.

It's interesting to see what these artists are listening to, and what they have to say about it.

Emily Reo - Minha Gatinha

Emily Reo just put her album Minha Gatinha online for free, originally only being available through purchase of cassette. This isn't to say you shouldn't still buy the cassette if you fall in love with Minha Gatinha! I had heard a few songs that had been floating around the internet but never the whole album. It's really awesome! Each song is approached with similar textures--lofi with some reverby click track drums, guitar/keys, sometimes xylophone or other little eccentric things and Emily's vocals. With this there is a cohesiveness to the album where you won't get taken out of the mood from track to track, and yet each song sounds different and has it's own mood. Some songs are soothing uplifting or sad songs, and others like "Paper Books" or"Metal On Your Skin"are a little more eerie. Masked behind all that reverb is a really pretty voice. Minha Gatinha is the perfect bedroom mix for a rainy day.

MoonLasso covers Animal Collective

MoonLasso is the project of Malee Bringardner from Tallahassee, Florida. She is sister to the Oh Fortuna dudes, like I said, such a musical family. A few months ago she released a cover she did of "Summertime Clothes" by Animal Collective and it's really nice because it's so different from the original. There's been remixes that have captured Animal Collective's more beat/electronic side they are going toward but this uses no stems from the original song, just a nice folk-ish-chill-lullaby-sounding cover of the song.

Catch her live set July 17th or 18th at Endless Bummer in Gainesville, Florida. This festival will include Totally Nebular, Sumsun, Oh Fortuna, Truman Peyote, MillionYoung, Diamond Man and about 30 more bands.

Panda Bear new songs

Panda Bear's performance at Primavera this year has been the best quality audio capture of his live performance of new material to date. He is releasing his first single, the title track "Tomboy", on Paw Tracks July 13. The rest of the album will come out in singles like this until the actual release comes out in September. These recordings have really got me excited for the new album. How it will turn out is pretty unpredictable, some songs seem to be a step in a more dance/beat direction and some seem more slow and eerie.

Spirituals

Portland based Spirituals is the project of Tyler Tadlock. With choppy beats and an interesting mix of colorful textures for melody, Spirituals crafts a refreshing sound. It could be said this may be what a groovier The Books would sound like with some beats, some touch of Matmos or Autechre. But really it's its own, it's layered with a bunch of different subtle melodies with the arrangement ever changing and evolving. Very magical sounding, nice feels.

Off Balance Atlas

Off Balance Atlas is Forrest Reiff from Tallahassee, Florida. His EP "Myriad Ethos" evokes a feeling of out-of-body, safe but creepy, slow thinking. Out in the woods, campfire rituals, darkness. For lovers of Teeth Mountain, Prince Rama, and Gang Gang Dance.

Waaga Records is an independent record label based in Sacramento, California. It is an offshoot of Lefse Records, who have released records for artists like Neon Indian and Tape Deck Mountain in the past. Waaga's focus is on more experimental or less easily definable music. Power Animal

I was originally shown Power Animal, by Attached Hands while we were up for a show in Orlando. Power Animal is a colorful band currently based in Philadelphia, PA. They use a lot of different textures in their really melodic music with a mix of horns, bells, toy sounds and "band"-like instruments like drums, bass, and guitar in a way that might catch fans of Architecture in Helsinki or Au. But Power Animal does it in their own unique way; their music is experimental in a way that they stand out from being labeled in a specific genre, but is instantly accessible and easy feel good listening.

Deradoorian

Angel Deradoorian, mostly known as a member of Dirty Projectors, records solo simply as Deradoorian. Touring as young as seventeen, she has been busy with music for a long time. Last year she released an EP titled "Mind Raft". The chants on the opening track "Weed Jam' may remind you of Prince Rama, but Deradoorian sounds more like a less sporadic Dirty Projectors who is more into rock/folk style genres rather than eclectic pop. Maybe you could say "Mind Raft" sounds like a more acid "Acid Tongue" by Jenny Lewis.

Past Two Days

Saturday we played at a house show our friend Eamon Ford set up, it was fun we played with Emily Reo, Levek, and Dark Sea of Awareness. It was also sort of a potluck and there was a lot of delicious food. Harold, one of the guys that lives there, is a food genius and made the best vegan almond cookies. A lot of good food and good people...and good music.

Each of their sets were really great. Levek, playing solo as opposed to his whole band, used a loop pedal--with it he would start beatboxing (which he is really good at) and then layering melody from guitar, keyboard, or whatever. It ended up sounded really full and amazing, he really has mastered using a loop pedal.

Next Dark Sea of Awareness played, his set always being slightly different. He makes use of a Kaoss Pad, an Electribe, and a guitar through a multieffect pedal. At times it is something you could probably dance too with electrobeats and synth sounds, and other times it's mediative and really ambient. After we went, Emily Reo played with Levek doing drums as well as Kenzie. It was interesting to hear her set with them adding percussion atop her songs.

Last night we played at Club Sandwich, a little warehouse space in Lake Worth rented by CJ and Jordan which make up three great bands Love Handles / Copy City Chill Pillars / Freak Church. The show included The Dewars, Normal American Sex, The Band in Heaven, Guy Harvey, and us.

The Dewars played with two guitars, bass, and drums tonight. Their sets always vary a member or two and can sound drastically different with acoustic or electric guitars and whatever else instrument accompaning, and I like hearing all the different sides of them very much. Kevin (Totem Pole) played drums for them, but he also played guitar and did backup vocals in the band Normal American Sex, a fairly new band composed also of JP and TJ of Surfer Blood and another dude doing bass. It was great to hear them, it was pretty much their 2nd show and they played really good. They've got some same melody construction as Surfer Blood but JP plays keys and so that is a big part of the sound.

Well...not sure what else to say...both shows were awesome and a lot of great bands played, I recommend if you haven't heard of some of the bands mentioned above you check them out.

Such good news, Totally Nebular will being recording their new album beginning August 1st. I've already heard a lot of the songs live, and it sounds so good. New surprises too (Eddie playing the accordian). We filmed some of their new songs at Total Bummer but unfortunetly the tape crapped out and wouldn't capture, but Anastasia Creasey filmed one of their new songs in Gainesville.

Hopefully we can expect the album to be out by the end of the year...

jamesDUNK - Softener
jamesDUNK - Emily

It's cool because in Rabbit Punch, Michael Parallax, and jamesDUNK you can hear all different aspects of Oh Fortuna. It's one very musicial family (don't forget MoonLasso).

Evenings - North Dorm EP

"North Dorm" got released early. Evenings's EP can be downloaded free on his bandcamp page. Crisp and clear sound sparkling at the right frequencies in the mix, simple yet dynamic electro relaxed sound. It gives me the idea this may be for Postal Service fans if you enjoyed the instrumental Dntel songs. Nathan definitely has his own thing going on though, with a new type of dreamy sound I can fall into and sleep, relax, or just feel good.

Evenings - Friend [Lover]
Evenings - Goodbye Forever

This EP is really worth the download, every song is really really good and everything is put together well.
